FIFA Guardians™ Safeguarding in Sport Award
What is the FIFA Safeguarding in Sport Award?
The FIFA Guardians Safeguarding in Sport Award is a series of five online courses designed to support the work of safeguarding officers and other people in sport.
You will receive recognition for each one of the five courses you successfully complete by collecting five individual ‘Digital Badges’ awarded by The Open University. The FIFA Guardians Safeguarding in Sport Award will be achieved by those who collect all five Digital Badges.
The starting point for everybody is Course 1 – the FIFA Guardians Safeguarding Essentials 90-minute course. When you successfully complete this course, you will be awarded your first ‘FIFA Guardians Safeguarding Essentials Certificate and Digital Badge’.
If you achieve the full FIFA Guardians Safeguarding in Sport Award you will be recognised as having the knowledge to contribute to creating a safe and supportive environment for everybody in sport, especially children. After completing the FIFA Guardians Safeguarding in Sport Award, you will have an in-depth knowledge of your safeguarding responsibilities, how to apply them and how your own values and behaviours can influence the raising of safeguarding standards in sport.

Methods to engage with external stakeholders and partners to develop an effective safeguarding culture.

The process of developing and implementing effective safeguarding policies and procedures.
Identifying and managing risks
How to effectively identify and manage safeguarding risks.
Approaches to safeguarding concerns
Approaches to identifying, reporting and managing safeguarding concerns.
Developing professional skills
The development of your professional and transferable skills.

Course 1
FIFA Guardians™ Safeguarding Essentials
Are you involved in sport in a voluntary or paid role either for a National Federation, a club, or as a safeguarding officer, a coach, manager, referee or through another important role such as a physiotherapist or medic? Then this short course is designed to support people like you. The course is divided into three 30-minute sessions for you to study at your own pace.
COURSE 2
FIFA Guardians™ Starting your Safeguarding Journey
Course 2 supports those who are new to their safeguarding role or wish to build on their knowledge. It is approximately 12 hours of online learning. Course 2 explores key safeguarding principles and includes:
- Building support for your early work in safeguarding.
- Assessing and prioritising safeguarding risks.
- Developing your organisation’s safeguarding policy, procedures and guidance.
- Safeguarding reporting and your organisation’s response to concerns.
This course is free and open to everyone. It is strongly recommended that you complete Course 1 before starting Course 2 since it builds on the ideas developed in the FIFA Guardians Safeguarding Essentials (Course 1). COURSE 3
FIFA Guardians™ Developing your Safeguarding Effectiveness
Course 3 continues to build the knowledge of those who are new to their safeguarding role including clarifying recommended ways of working. It is approximately 26 hours of online learning. Course 3 helps you develop your safeguarding effectiveness, exploring key safeguarding working practices and knowledge, and includes:
- How you can influence others.
- Processes, such as developing risk assessments, codes of conduct and policy.
- How to develop your organisation’s approach to safer recruitment and preventing grooming.
- Your evaluation of the organisation’s response to safeguarding concerns and reporting processes.
This course is free and open to everyone. It is strongly recommended that you complete Course 2 before starting Course 3, since it builds on the ideas developed in FIFA Guardians Starting your Safeguarding Journey (Course 2). COURSE 4
FIFA Guardians™ Embedding Safeguarding Practice
Course 4 continues to extend your knowledge of key safeguarding topics and explains some new principles to help you embed safeguarding practice across your organisation. It is approximately 20 hours of online learning and quizzes. Course 4 helps you develop your safeguarding effectiveness, and:
- Explores personal qualities and how you can support your own self-care.
- Explains the first steps for how to develop safeguarding learning opportunities across your organisation.
- Builds your understanding of safeguarding policy, guidance and processes for competitions and tournaments.
- Enhances your knowledge of managing safeguarding cases.
This course is free and open to everyone. It is strongly recommended that you complete Course 3 before starting Course 4, since it builds on the ideas developed. COURS 4 (FRENCH)
FIFA Guardians™ Intégrer les bonnes pratiques de préventio
Le cours 4 continue d’étendre vos connaissances sur les sujets clés de la sauvegarde et explique de nouveaux principes pour vous aider à intégrer la pratique de la sauvegarde dans votre organisation. Il représente environ 20 heures d’apprentissage en ligne et de questionnaires. Le cours 4 vous aide à développer votre efficacité en matière de prévention, et :
- • Il explore les qualités personnelles nécessaires et comment prendre soin de soi-même.
• Il explique les premières étapes à suivre pour développer des opportunités d’apprentissage sur la prévention en faveur des enfants dans votre organisation.
• Il renforce votre compréhension de la politique, des directives et des processus de prévention en faveur des enfants pour les compétitions et les tournois.
• Il améliore votre connaissance de la gestion des cas affectant des enfants.

FIFA Guardians™: Claves para integrar las prácticas de salvaguardia y protección
El curso 4 profundizará sus conocimientos sobre todo lo relacionado con la salvaguardia y protección, y descubrirá algunos nuevos principios para que pueda integrar las buenas prácticas de salvaguardia y protección en toda su empresa. Su duración aproximada es de 20 horas lectivas de capacitación en linea y preguntas de evaluación de lo aprendido. Al concluir el curso 4, será capaz de desarrollar unas prácticas de salvaguardia y protección eficaces y:
- Explorar su potencial personal y entender cómo cuidar mejor de sí mismo/a.
- Explicar los primeros pasos sobre cómo desarrollar oportunidades de aprendizaje de salvaguardia y protección en toda su organización.
- Mejorar la comprensión y de la política, orientación y procesos de salvaguardia y protección de cara a las competiciones y torneos.
- Saber mejor cómo gestionar los casos de salvaguardia y protección.
Este curso es gratuito y abierto a todo el mundo. Se recomienda encarecidamente haber completado el curso 3 antes de embarcarse en el cuarto, ya que se basa en las ideas desarrolladas en el tercer curso. FIFA Guardians™ Promoting Wider Safeguarding Change
Course 5 introduces a new topic, Safeguarding in the digital world, and helps you think about how your organisation might learn from safeguarding experiences and develop a positive safeguarding culture. It is approximately 12 hours of online learning and a quiz, which can be completed at your own pace. Course 5 helps you identify organisational strengths and weaknesses, and:
- Recognise some of the specific safeguarding risks in the digital world and start to develop plans to manage these risks.
- Identify how you can support your organisation to learn from safeguarding experiences and to develop a positive safeguarding culture.
This course is free and open to everyone. It is strongly recommended that you complete Course 4 before starting Course 5, since it builds on the ideas developed. COURS 5 (FRENCH)
FIFA Guardians™ Promouvoir un plus grand changement dans la prévention en faveur des enfants
Le cours 5 aborde une nouvelle thématique, la prévention dans le monde numérique, et a pour but de vous aider à définir comment votre organisation pourrait tirer des leçons des affaires de prévention et développer une culture positive de prévention en faveur des enfants. Il comprend d’environ 12 heures de formation en ligne et un questionnaire à votre rythme. Le cours 5 vous aidera à identifier les forces et les faiblesses de votre organisation et à réaliser les points suivants :
- Identifier quelques risques liés à la prévention dans le monde numérique et commencer à développer et à mettre en place des politiques et des programmes de gestion de ces risques ;
- Identifier des manières d’aider votre organisation à tirer des leçons des affaires de prévention et développer une culture positive de prévention en faveur des enfants ;

FIFA Guardians™: Promover un cambio más amplio en la salvaguardia y la protección
El Curso 5 introduce un nuevo tema, la salvaguardia en el mundo digital. Le ayuda a reflexionar sobre cómo su organización podría aprender de las experiencias en materia de salvaguardia y desarrollar una cultura de salvaguardia y protección positiva. Su duración aproximada es de 12 horas lectivas de capacitación en linea y un cuestionario, que se puede completar al ritmo de cada uno. El curso 5 le ayuda a identificar los puntos fuertes y débiles de la organización y a:
- Reconocer algunos de los riesgos específicos de salvaguardia en el mundo digital y empezar a diseñar planes orientados a gestionar estos riesgos.
- Identificar cómo ayudar a su organización a aprender de las experiencias de salvaguardia y a desarrollar una cultura de salvaguardia y protección positiva.
